Emperor Yohannes IV

A fierce defender of Ethiopian independence who successfully repelled Egyptian, Mahdist, and Italian incursions.

A deeply pious warrior-king who spent his entire reign fiercely defending Ethiopia's borders from multiple foreign invasions.

The Defender of the Realm

Crowned in 1872 after the turbulent era of Tewodros II, Emperor Yohannes IV inherited a nation surrounded by threats. While Tewodros sought to centralize power aggressively, Yohannes adopted a more pragmatic approach, ruling as a "King of Kings" who respected the autonomy of regional lords in exchange for their loyalty and military support against foreign enemies.

His reign was defined by near-constant warfare to protect Ethiopian sovereignty during the early stages of the "Scramble for Africa." Yohannes proved to be a brilliant military commander, fighting defensive wars on multiple fronts simultaneously.

Defeating Egypt

In the 1870s, an expanding Egyptian Empire sought to control the entire Nile basin and the Horn of Africa. Yohannes crushed the modernized, European-officered Egyptian armies at the pivotal battles of Gundet (1875) and Gura (1876), halting Egyptian expansionism permanently.

The Mahdist War

In the 1880s, the fanatical Mahdist state in Sudan launched devastating raids into western Ethiopia, sacking the historic city of Gondar. Yohannes marched his massive army west to confront them, prioritizing the defense of the Christian empire over internal politics.

Italian Encroachment and Martyrdom

While Yohannes was fighting the Egyptians and Mahdists, the Italians established a foothold on the Red Sea coast (modern Eritrea). Yohannes’s general, Ras Alula, defeated the Italians at Dogali in 1887, marking the first major African victory over a modern European army.

Tragically, Emperor Yohannes IV was mortally wounded in 1889 at the Battle of Metemma while leading his troops to a near-certain victory against the Sudanese Mahdists. His selfless sacrifice cemented his legacy as a martyr-king who prioritized the defense of Ethiopia's faith and borders above his own life.
